Homo Ludens

Childhood, nostalgia and play, lay the foundations of my practice. My project looked at the importance of play and how I reconstruct this idea of play now that I removed from a space as an adult where play is actively encouraged. The two main pieces are the Homo Ludens desk and the Paper Mache Bead Maze. Homo Ludens is the title of a book by Johan Huizinga that looks at play as the foundation of all culture and the importance of it in our society. While growing into my adult identity, I decided to take the time to reflect back on the pieces of my childhood that point to the person I am now. A special poem entitled 'Childhood Bliss' was a poem I wrote in year 8 about how important reading was in building peace in my life as a child. Together these artefacts form 'Can I Play Now'.
