Lesbomania: Put a Pin In

Past, Present and Future of Lesbianism. From an exploration into vintage fashions, to buttons and accessories, to lesbian historical signalling. This project came from a deep love for vintage fashion and aesthetics. My initial focus was on buttons: their use on clothing, accessories related to them, and the various meanings of a button. However, upon viewing 'No Secret Anymore', a documentary about the Modern Lesbian Civil Rights Movement, I found an important connection to my look at vintage fashions. Lesbian signalling is an incredibly large part of our history, ranging from jewellery to hairstyles. This exhibition was a very vulnerable one for me as I turned my coming out into a small comic and really explored my own connections to my sexuality and gender. Giving myself the freedom to explore this through textile and sculpture, was incredibly cathartic and fuelled a deep looking into my own histories.
