The Dream Writer

Combining the weird and wonderful motifs of my dreams with a deep dive into layers in art and literature, resulted in the beginnings of my playful textile approach. This project began with a very vulnerable set of questioning to myself, looking at my ideals, the intentionality of meaning in my art, and the relationship between reading and dreaming. An initial interest in pop-up books and masks, focused on the very literal process of layering. My ability to identify a disconnect with my work had generated here and I started drawing again on impulse to see how my communication would differ. The strange success of my illustrations lead to the painted/applique textile result you see now. The Dream Writer in its final form truly looked at my ideals with making and challenged my intentions with meaning by forcing me into another mode of practice. Thanks to the discovery of Jenny Rask's fleshy sculptures and Julia Armfield's visceral Salt Slow, I unlocked a connection between art, form and literature that I have been seeking.
